You Willpower is Finite

Can you turn over a new leaf, go on a diet, learn a new language, and get up every morning at dawn to meditate and clean your house? The idea of ego depletion says, “no.” And it has physical evidence to back that up.

Never trust Swedish weather

I came back yesterday from a hike and camping in Tyresö. On the way out we hit a huge downpour leaving my jacket completely soaked and worthless. We ended up staying the night but left a day early. The sky was dark and an even worse storm was on the way. We took advantage of a couple hours without rain to pack up and head out. It sucks we didn’t get to stay but it was a needed hike and is always welcome.

“Liberals today are arguing that 300 years of immoral policy can be undone by changing the subject. If only we can fool white racists by helping black people under the guise of “class,” maybe we can get out from under this. But the math says that black people are a class unto themselves. There is no “black and white” elite, no “black and white” middle class, no colorless poor. And when you consider that white supremacy is a dominant strain in our history, how could there be?” —Ta-Nehisi Coates  (via theatlantic)

Spiritual Hike

I am going on a spiritual hike for three days. These things are much more fun without a god getting in the way.

“The way things are supposed to work is that we’re supposed to know virtually everything about what they do: that’s why they’re called public servants. They’re supposed to know virtually nothing about what we do: that’s why we’re called private individuals. This dynamic - the hallmark of a healthy and free society - has been radically reversed. Now, they know everything about what we do, and are constantly building systems to know more. Meanwhile, we know less and less about what they do, as they build walls of secrecy behind which they function. That’s the imbalance that needs to come to an end. No democracy can be healthy and functional if the most consequential acts of those who wield political power are completely unknown to those to whom they are supposed to be accountable.” —

Glenn Greenwald (via azspot)
